Scientific American reports on Autism and food allergies

The April 2007 issue of Scientific American Digital reports on a possible link between diet and autism. Parents "describe astounding improvements that occurred as soon as they removed gluten (a mixture of plant proteins found in wheat, rye and barley) and casein (the main protein in dairy products) from their kids' meals."

The report goes on to say that there is little scientific evidence at the moment, but "investigators have launched the first rigorous tests of the diets, and the results may be available within a year." Click here for the full article (Registration or subscription required)

New gluten free labelling proposed will help celiacs identify food allergens

The FDA seeks to redefine "gluten free" labelling, helping to avoid misinterpretation.

The FDA also is proposing to deem misbranded a food bearing a gluten-free claim in its labeling if the food is inherently free of gluten and if the claimed does not refer to all foods of that same type (e.g., "milk, a gluten-free food" or "all milk is gluten-free").

In addition, a food made from oats that bears a gluten-free claim in its labeling would be deemed misbranded if the claim suggested that all such foods are gluten-free or if 20 ppm or more gluten is present in the food.
